«DrumPower» – Developments 2018

Also in 2018, the experiences of the Prevention Working Group at the Institute for Music Therapy and various reports from colleagues show that the »TrommelPower« project model has proven itself as a well-founded music therapy method in various preventive and therapeutic contexts and has been tested by graduates in new fields of practice successfully.

Applications
In addition to the project initiatives known from previous reports in Erlangen, Hamburg, Wolfratshausen and Munich, new DrumPower projects were carried out at various schools in 2019, for example in Meingkofen, Puchheim and Poing.

In the continuation of the cooperation project "a song for every class" with the Munich Philharmonic, a very nice project on the subject of garbage mountains was created in a second grade of the elementary school on Flurstraße in Munich.

Scientific discourse
In 2017 and 2018, the DrumPower project method was presented and discussed at various specialist congresses. On the "5. International Symposium on Music Therapy with Young People "in Jyväskulä the special cooperation with the schools was discussed.

Accompanying ongoing projects, the Working Group on Prevention provided a lively discourse on methodology, theory and research in the various fields of practice, which are reflected in various publications:

  • Prevention of Violence Through Music: Empirical Impact Analysis of a Music Therapy Project Model - Summary of the Doctoral Study of the Doctoral Dissertation
  • Music and Violence: Working with youth to prevent violence - Andreas Wölfl
  • Violence prevention In: Schmidt, Stegemann, Spitzer (ed.), Music therapy in psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders
  • DrumPower – a music therapy program for the prevention of violence. A project model of the Free Music Center e.V. Munich for work in schools and in the promotion of unaccompanied minor refugees

New insights into theory formation and research have also been gained in various graduation papers that refer to different aspects of the DrumPower method.

Professional support and supervision
In all Munich projects professional support and supervision takes place; In addition, this is provided, inter alia, for a high school in Erlangen (Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium) and for use in psychosomatic medicine.

Support
DrumPower projects with children, adolescents and young adults can usually only be realized thanks to the support and encouragement of foundations and private sponsors. Thanks are due in 2018 especially to the Barbara Weidinger Music Foundation.
