At the 3rd Symposium of the Network of Youth and Music Therapy on 11 April 2016 at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, UK, researchers and music therapists from several countries discussed relationships between youthful development and music therapy.

There were presented music-therapeutic approaches to tackling developmental psychological problems and mental illnesses in the youth age. In the discourse, it was found that adolescents need specific approaches to their development in order to feel addressed and to benefit from the therapy.

The lectures provided a broad panorama of specific methodological approaches, ranging from songwriting and band music, to specific improvisational forms, to the expression and creative processing of disappointment, aggression and difficult experiences in improvised roll-play and songs. In the presentation of different studies, the speakers demonstrated the effectiveness of the different approaches and showed connections between juvenile music consumption and psychological problems as well as neurophysiological connections of the effect of music. In particular, the high potential for development in the youth age and the great importance of music in this section of life were emphasized, which underlines a particularly great potential for the use of music therapy in youth.
